A hospital ship served all sides not just one but a German U-boat, U-86, did not care. The H.M.H.S. Llandovery Castle was a Canadian ship but in 1916 it was transformed into a Hospital Ship. But U-86 still torpedoed it, sinking it, and they rammed and destroyed the lifeboats, shooting the survivors, trying to get rid of the evidence. One boat got away though and all 24 survivors told the story. The captain of the U-boat and 2 of his lieutenants were arrested and put in jail for 4 years but they escaped after 4 months. The captain died in 1980. about 230 people died.

The Union Line had "Castle" in the name of the liners, and in the war she was the second of them (turned hospital ship) torpedoed and sunk with heavy loss of life. The other was the "Glenart Castle", sunk in February 1918 Wikipedia has both disasters in seperate articles.
